Thanksgiving weekend is the time for the Seattle Marathon. Just prior to the 2006 race, my friend and running colleague John Dickson (also the Photo Editor for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer) was sitting in a meeting at work when the powers that be brought up the idea of doing an article on people training for marathons. John volunteered that he liked to run with a group of interesting folks who liked nothing more than to run marathons as often as they could. Most of them are members of a group appropriately called the Marathon Maniacs. In addition to being great athletes, they're also great company. So - a photographer came out and joined us for a training run down on the Preston-Snoqualmie Trail, about 25 miles east of Seattle. We did a brisk 12 miles, in what turned out to be a deluge of rain (poor photographer, at least we were warm because we were running!). The article ran the day after Thanksgiving, and was a great surprise to us. The PI ran it on the front page, with a nice picture of us. I'd expected it to run, buried back in sports or perhaps in the local section. It was a slow news day, we're all front page material, or it was the day to feature freakish people front and center. I picked the paper up at a nearby convenience store, and was floored when I saw it. My father thanked me for making the front page for something less criminal than burning down a building. The picture from the front page is below. You can read the article in two parts : the front page, and the continuation.
